Ava’s hand fell away as if Margaret’s skin had burned her.
Her lips parted.
No sound came out.
Ethan walked straight to his mother.
“Did she hit you?”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
That was enough.
Ethan turned to Ava.
His face was not loud.
It was worse.
Controlled.
Dangerous.
Ava tried to recover.
“Ethan, I didn’t know.”
He stared at her.
“You didn’t know what?”
Her throat moved.
“I didn’t know she was your mother.”
The silence after that sentence was brutal.
Ethan looked around the room.
At every guest.
At every person who had watched.
Then back at Ava.
“So if she wasn’t my mother, it would have been fine?”
Ava’s face drained.
“No.
That’s not what I mean.”
That’s not what I mean.”
Near the bar, Diane Keller stepped forward.
“The camera recorded it.”
Ava turned sharply.
“What?”
Diane pointed toward the small black camera above the fireplace.
“It recorded everything.”
Ava’s fake innocence cracked.
“I barely touched her.”
Ethan took the tablet from Diane.
The footage played.
Ava stepping in front of Margaret.
The slap.
Margaret touching her cheek.
Then the audio came through.
“Get out of here! This is my boyfriend’s party!”
And Margaret’s calm reply.
“She means my son.”
Then Ava’s cruel laugh.
“Her son.
Ridiculous.”
Ridiculous.”
No one spoke.
The video did not only show the slap.
It showed the whole room watching.
It showed everyone choosing silence.
Ethan slowly set the tablet down.
Ava’s eyes filled with tears now.
Not when she hit Margaret.
Not when she mocked her.
Only now that consequences had arrived.
“Ethan,” she whispered.
“I love you.”
“I love you.”
He looked at her for a long time.
“No.”
Her face cracked.
“You loved being seen beside me.”
Ava shook her head.
“That’s not true.”
“You loved this house.
These people.
The invitations.
The idea of becoming Mrs. Hayes.”
These people.
The invitations.
The idea of becoming Mrs. Hayes.”
Then Ethan looked at his mother’s red cheek.
“You humiliated the woman who built me.”
Security moved closer.
Ava stepped back.
“You’re throwing me out?”
Ethan’s voice hardened.
“You told my mother to leave my party.”
He looked toward the front doors.
“Now you leave my home.”
Follow now before the whole mansion learns who Margaret really is.
