PART 2
The silence was unbearable.
Emily’s fingers trembled as she slowly lifted the lid.
Inside the box sat one thing.
Ryan Mitchell’s watch.
Nothing else.
No note.
No accusation.
Just the heavy gold watch she had recognized the second she saw it.
Emily gasped.
Her mother frowned.
“Honey… whose watch is that?”
No answer.
Her younger sister looked confused.
“Is this some kind of joke?”
I finally spoke.
“I found it on our coffee table this morning.”
Emily’s eyes filled with panic.
“Jake, I can explain—”
“Please do.”
My voice remained calm.
Too calm.
Because anger had already left me.
What remained was disappointment.
“Explain why your boss’s watch spent the night in our house.”
Her father slowly stood from his chair.
“What is he talking about, Emily?”
She looked from face to face.
Her mother.
Her sisters.
Her friends.
People who had defended her for years.
People who believed she was perfect.
“I wasn’t with Ryan,” she whispered.
I nodded slowly.
“Interesting.”
Then I reached into my pocket and placed my phone on the table.
“Because at one o’clock this morning, while I was standing inside our empty bedroom, you told me you were asleep in our bed.”
Several heads snapped toward Emily.
Her mother turned pale.
“Empty bedroom?” she repeated.
I pressed play.
Emily’s sleepy voice filled the room.
“I was asleep… I was just about to drift off again.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Emily burst into tears.
“Jake, please—”
“Where were you?”
She opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Opened it again.
Then, to everyone’s surprise, she screamed:
“I WASN’T CHEATING!”
The room froze.
Three Teenagers Stopped a Korean-American Billionaire’s Wedding and Forced Him to Hear the One Word He Had Been Running From
Because innocent people usually answer the question.
They don’t answer the accusation.
Her father looked devastated.
“Then where were you?” he asked softly.
Emily collapsed into a chair.
Her entire body shaking.
And then she said something none of us expected.
“I couldn’t tell anyone.”
She looked directly at me.
“I signed papers promising I wouldn’t.”
Confusion spread across every face in the room.
“What papers?” I asked.
Emily sobbed harder.
“Three months ago, Ryan’s wife came to me.”
My blood turned cold.
“His wife?”
Emily nodded.
“She was dying.”
Nobody moved.
“Stage-four pancreatic cancer.”
The room became silent again.
“She asked me to help her finish a secret project before she died.
Ryan didn’t know.
Nobody knew.”
Emily wiped her eyes.
“Last night was her final night.”
I stared at her.
“Then why lie?”
More tears.
“Because she made me promise that Ryan would never know until after she was gone.”
My mind struggled to catch up.
“Where were you?”
Emily slowly reached into her purse.
And placed a folded photograph on the table.
It showed Emily.
Ryan.
And a woman lying in a hospice bed.
Between them stood two little girls.
Identical twins.
Ryan’s daughters.
On the back of the photo, written in shaky handwriting, were six words:
Thank you for helping my family.
— Sarah Mitchell
But before anyone could speak, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone turned.
I opened the door.
Standing outside was Ryan Mitchell.
His eyes were red from crying.
And in his hands was an urn.
He looked at Emily and whispered:
“She’s gone.”
Then he looked at the room full of strangers and asked the question that made Emily collapse completely.
“Why are all these people here?”
PART 3 changes everything.
